What happens when the Jordan Brand sets out to create a new product for Roger Federer? A tennis shoe resembling the Air Jordan 3!
Federer debuted the new shoes, called the Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour AJ3, during his first round win at the U.S. Open on Tuesday night. Michael Jordan himself looked on from Federer’s box as he dominated on the court. In an interview with Mary Joe Fernandez during the match, Jordan said that Federer had a lot of input in the new creation of the new shoe.
Roger Federer and Michael Jordan are without a doubt two of the greatest athletes ever in their respective sports. Both are international superstars with their own Nike clothing and shoe lines. Jordan recently became a billionaire after increasing his ownership stake in the Charlotte Bobcats, while Federer holds the record for most grand slam wins.
The Jordan Brand has been one of the most successful brands in the sports apparel business. In 2012, Jordan Brand had 58 percent control of the U.S. shoe market and according to Susquehanna Financial analyst Christopher Svezia, “the brand grew by 25-30 percent in 2012, and as of 2013, the brand has generated more than $1.75 billion globally.”
With a partnership between two of Nike’s highest paid athletes, both Nike and the Jordan Brand can expect a boost to their shoe sales with this product release. The Vapor 9 Tour AJ3 is set to be released August 27th on Nike’s website and will be priced at $200.
